In the past years there has been a tremendous increase in awareness to the
phenomenon called
Blood Diamonds or Conflict Diamonds
Blood diamonds are diamonds that are unlawfully mined by rebelled forces in different
countries in Africa and are used to finance their different activities.
In order to do so, cruel and brutal acts are common, not to mention the exploitation and
slavery of local population and children. In order to minimize this problem the Israeli government
and other western countries must provide documentation that prove that the diamonds they
are selling are not conflict diamonds.
Procedure - Kimberly is an international forum uniting governments, non government organizations, and other different groups in the field.
It all started with the purpose to arrange a trustworthy organization that will inspect commerce of rough diamonds,
and that will avoid dealing with blood diamonds.
Meaning rough diamonds that will help finance guerilla organizations, wars etc.
This process began in the city Kimberly in South Africa and was initiated by the South Africa, Namibia and Botswana governments.
The Kimberly Process will insure that every shipment of rough diamonds among the different companies will need to
be accompanied with an official Kimberly certificate provided by the exporting country. In addition the world diamond council
(WDC) has taken upon itself to stamp the invoice with a seal that will prove their obligation for the whole chain of sales of
the polished diamonds.
States that have not joined the organization will be banned from commerce.
There are more than 70 countries that are part of the Kimberly organization. Israel was one of the founders of the process,
and issued the first certificate in the world.
It was decided in the 2008 Kimberly assembly in New Delhi that Israel will hold the position of chairman of the prestigious process in
2010.
