The Asscher cut and the newly designed Royal Asscher cut are extremely similar and it is not accidentally. Both Asscher Cuts were created by the Asscher family. To understand the differences between the asscher cuts we need to go back to the origin of the asscher cut itself.
Asscher Cut Diamonds and Emerald Cut Diamonds are very similar. Both Emerald and Asscher Cuts are step cuts and often referred to as square emerald cut.
Joseph Asscher was an eminent diamond cutter who cut the 3,106 carat Cullinan Diamond. Asscher worked in Amsterdam. Over the early parts of the 20th century, Joseph Asscher continued to refine what was quickly becoming the Asscher Cut Diamond. In 1902 Joseph Asscher upheld his father’s reputation for skill and innovation by designing the original Asscher cut.
Since then, it is said that the innovation and skill level of Asscher Cuts has been passed on from one generation to another. In 1999, Edward and Joop Asscher decided to try and improve their Great-grandfather, Joseph Asscher’s design for the original Asscher Cut diamond. After two years of intensive research, consultations multiple refinements, Edward and Joop Asscher presented the world with the Royal Asscher Cut as a successor to the original Asscher Cut.
The new diamond, called The Royal Asscher Cut, is perfectly symmetrical, with proportions that fall within strict parameters; The Royal Asscher Cut has a high crown and 74 facets - whereas the original Asscher Cut and square-emerald cut have 58 facets - 16 facets less.
Asscher cut diamonds are now available from most diamond dealers, though the recent Royal Asscher Cut is patented and only available from Royal Asscher.
