Natural Fancy Pink Diamonds are extremely rare. It is said that for every 1 million carat of rough white diamonds only 1 carat will be defined as fancy pink.
Over 90% of pink diamonds are mined from the Argyle mine in Australia. And even within the Argyle mine (which specializes in pink diamonds), less than 1% of the diamonds are pink diamonds.
Pink diamonds are considered type II diamonds. Their color is due to a process called Plastic Deformation. This deformation occurs during the crystal growth.

The largest pink diamond in the world is the Persian Darya- I-Noor (translate: Sea of Light). It is set in the Iranian Crown Jewels. It’s unbelievable weight is approx. 186 carats. Due to its size, it is said that the pink color is very visible.
The Steinmetz pink diamond is the second most famous pink diamond. It is a Fancy Vivid Pink Diamond weighing 59.60 carats. It is the largest known GIA vivid pink diamond in the world.
